Gold Calculator for Saudi Arabia
This guide explains the gold price today in Saudi Arabia: how the live price is set, how to read the price table above, what the karat table means, and why a shop quote is higher than the price on the screen. First, the key fact: there is one Saudi gold price. Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam and Madinah all use the same national rate, set from the world spot price and converted into riyals.
How the gold price in Saudi Arabia is set
Gold is traded worldwide in US dollars per troy ounce — 31.1034768 grams, the standard weight unit for gold pricing. No Saudi shop sets the price from scratch: it starts as the international spot price and reaches a Saudi shop counter in three steps.
- Dollars per gram: divide the dollar price per troy ounce by 31.1034768.
- Riyals per gram: multiply by the riyal rate — about 3.75 riyals per dollar, because the Saudi riyal is pegged to the US dollar.
- Your karat: multiply by the karat purity. 22K is 22/24, or 91.67%, pure, so a 22K gram costs 22/24 of the 24K price. 21K is 87.5% pure, 18K is 75% and 14K is 58.33%.
Because the riyal is pegged, the exchange rate barely moves, and nearly all movement in the Saudi gold price comes from the dollar spot price. When the riyal price jumps, the cause is the gold market, not the riyal.
How to read the live price on this page
The table at the top of this page is the live Saudi gold price in SAR. Each row is one karat — 24K, 22K, 21K, 18K and 14K — and shows the price per gram, per tola, per troy ounce and per kilogram, so you can read the unit your shop quotes in.
Check three details every time: the last-updated time (the price refreshes about every 60 seconds), the day’s change against yesterday, and the 30-day chart, which shows the recent trend at a glance.
Remember what the table shows: the raw spot rate before dealer commission and labour charges. The shop price is usually higher — the table is the benchmark to judge a shop quote against, not the quote itself.
The karat table: 24K, 22K, 21K, 18K and 14K
Karat measures purity: pure gold is 24 karat. Every lower karat is an alloy — gold mixed with other metals to make it harder or cheaper. The table’s prices are linked by the karat fraction: a 22K gram costs 22/24 of the 24K gram price, a 21K gram costs 21/24.
- 24K — 100% pure, 999 fineness. The reference price for the metal.
- 22K — 91.67% pure, 917 fineness. The classic Gulf jewellery karat.
- 21K — 87.5% pure, 875 fineness. The most common jewellery karat in Saudi Arabia.
- 18K — 75% pure, 750 fineness. The usual karat for lighter, detailed pieces.
- 14K — 58.33% pure, 583 fineness. The most affordable karat in the table.
Match the karat to the purpose: 24K for bars and coins, 21K and 22K for everyday jewellery, 18K and 14K for detailed pieces. Always compare prices within the same karat.
Spot price vs shop price
The spot price is the raw market rate for the metal. The shop price is what you actually pay, and it is higher — the gap is normal. A shop adds three things to the metal value: making charges, its own margin, and tax.
Making charges are the biggest reason quotes differ. They are charged per gram or as a flat amount, and they vary with the design: a plain bangle costs less to make than an intricate bridal set. The metal price is the same everywhere, so compare making charges across two or three shops for the same design and weight.
On tax: VAT is 15% on gold jewellery in Saudi Arabia. Investment gold — bars and coins of at least 99% purity — is exempt. Ask for the bill split into metal value, making charge and VAT, each on its own line.
Worked examples: from the world price to a shop quote
The examples below use round numbers to show the maths. These are hypothetical numbers, not today’s prices.
Suppose the spot price is $4,000 per troy ounce. Per gram: $4,000 ÷ 31.1034768 = about $128.60 per gram of pure 24K gold. In riyals at the peg: $128.60 × 3.75 = about 482.25 riyals per gram. A 10-gram piece of 24K gold is therefore worth about 4,822.50 riyals at the metal price, before making charges.
At 22K, 482.25 × 22 ÷ 24 = about 442.06 riyals per gram. At 21K, 482.25 × 21 ÷ 24 = about 421.97 riyals per gram — so a 10-gram 21K bangle holds about 4,219.69 riyals of metal. Add a hypothetical making charge of 300 riyals (subtotal 4,519.69) and 15% VAT (about 677.95), and the total is about 5,197.64 riyals. Every figure here is hypothetical — the point is the structure: metal value, making charge, VAT.
To run the same maths on a real quote, use the Gold Value Calculator for the metal value at the live Saudi price, and the Gold Price per Gram, Tola and Ounce Converter to put per-tola and per-gram quotes on the same unit.
How to check the live price before you buy
Do this on the day you buy — the price moves while the market is open.
- Check the per-gram price for your karat in the table above — 21K and 22K for jewellery, 24K for bars and coins.
- Work out the metal value with the Gold Value Calculator: enter the weight and karat.
- Convert units before you compare. If one shop quotes per tola and another per gram, use the Gold Price per Gram, Tola and Ounce Converter to put both on the same unit.
- Check the pure gold in the piece with the Gold Weight and Purity Calculator — 22K is 91.67% pure, 21K is 87.5%.
Buying tips
- Check the live price on the day you buy, and value the piece first with the Gold Value Calculator.
- Compare making charges across two or three shops — the metal price is the same everywhere.
- Check the hallmark and karat — 22K or 916 means 22 karat, 21K or 875 means 21 karat. If a piece is unmarked, have it tested.
- Weigh the piece and check the pure-gold content with the Gold Weight and Purity Calculator.
- Ask for the bill split into parts, and keep the receipt and any certificate.
- Match the karat to the purpose: 21K and 22K for everyday jewellery, 24K for bars and coins.
Selling your gold back
Shops buy gold back at the live spot price minus a discount — the buy-back price is always below the selling price, and the making charge is not refunded. The buyer pays for the pure gold content, so work out the pure weight first with the Gold Weight and Purity Calculator.
Keep the original receipt and certificate: they prove the karat and the shop of origin. Get quotes from two buyers before you accept one, and get a separate valuation for any well-made or antique piece before you sell it as scrap.
Where to buy gold in Saudi Arabia
Because the price is national, the choice of city is about the markets, not the rate. Jeddah’s gold trade centres on the Al Balad souq and Oasis Mall — see the Gold Price in Jeddah guide. In Madinah, the trade sits around the Prophet’s Mosque — Bilal Market and Souq Al Gharbiah — see the Gold Price in Madinah guide.
The short version
The gold price today in Saudi Arabia is the world spot price per troy ounce, divided by 31.1034768 to get dollars per gram, multiplied by the riyal peg of about 3.75 riyals per dollar, and adjusted for karat. The table above shows that live price in SAR for every karat. The shop price adds making charges, margin and VAT — so check the live price, compare making charges, and ask for the bill split into its parts before you pay.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the gold price today in Saudi Arabia?
The live price is shown in the table at the top of this page, in SAR per gram for every karat, with the last-updated time. It is the raw spot rate before dealer commission and labour charges.
How is the gold price in Saudi Arabia calculated?
From the international spot price in US dollars per troy ounce: divide by 31.1034768 to get dollars per gram, multiply by the riyal rate of about 3.75 riyals per dollar, then multiply by the karat fraction — 22/24 for 22K, 21/24 for 21K.
What is the 24K gold price per gram in Saudi Arabia today?
The first row of the table at the top of this page, in SAR, with the last-updated time. Check the table on the day you buy.
Why is the shop price higher than the live price?

Making charges pay for the craftsmanship that turns raw gold into a finished piece. They are charged per gram or as a flat amount, and they vary by design, brand and shop.
Is there VAT on gold in Saudi Arabia?
VAT is 15% on gold jewellery. Investment gold — bars and coins of at least 99% purity — is exempt. Ask for the bill split into metal value, making charge and VAT.

Open the table at the top of this page and check the per-gram price for your karat, then use the Gold Value Calculator to work out the metal value of the exact weight you plan to buy.
How do I convert a per-tola quote to per gram?
Divide the per-tola price by 11.6638, the number of grams in one tola. The Gold Price per Gram, Tola and Ounce Converter does this for you, and also converts troy ounces and kilograms.
Can I sell my gold back to a shop in Saudi Arabia?
Yes. Shops buy gold back at the live spot price minus a discount, paying for the pure gold content only. Work out the pure weight first, keep your receipt, and compare two buyers.
