Gold Price per Gram, Tola and Ounce Converter

Use this gold price per gram, tola and ounce converter to turn a gold price quoted in one weight unit into the equivalent price in every other common unit. Gold is rarely quoted in only one unit: a shop may quote per tola, the international spot price is quoted per troy ounce, retail jewellery is usually priced per gram, and wholesale bars are quoted per kilogram. The gold is the same, but the numbers look very different, and without a conversion you cannot tell which quote is actually cheaper. Enter the price you were given and the unit it was quoted in, and this tool shows the matching price per gram, per tola, per troy ounce and per kilogram, all in the same currency you entered.

This matters most when you compare two quotes that use different units. A price of 1,500 per tola and a price of 130 per gram cannot be compared directly, because a tola weighs much more than a gram. Once both are put on the same unit, the comparison is simple arithmetic. The same problem appears when you compare a shop quote with a market report: spot reports are almost always per troy ounce, while a shop in South Asia or the Gulf may quote per tola. Converting both to per gram gives a single, fair basis for the comparison, without guessing at the weight factors from memory.

How the conversion works

The conversion uses fixed weight factors, not a live price. One gram is the base unit. One tola equals 11.6638 grams, one troy ounce equals 31.1034768 grams, and one kilogram equals 1,000 grams. First, the converter finds the price for one gram by dividing the price you entered by the number of grams in the unit it was quoted in. Then it multiplies that per-gram price by the grams in each target unit. A per-tola price is therefore the per-gram price times 11.6638, a per-troy-ounce price is the per-gram price times 31.1034768, and a per-kilogram price is the per-gram price times 1,000.

Nothing else changes in the conversion. The currency stays the same, the karat and purity stay the same, and no making charges, tax or dealer margin are added or removed. Results are rounded to two decimal places, which is enough for comparing shop quotes and market reports. Enter the price exactly as it was quoted to you, in your own currency, and check that you have chosen the unit the quote actually used. A common mistake is to enter a per-tola price while the unit is set to per gram, or to confuse a troy ounce with an ordinary ounce. If the result looks far too high or far too low, check the unit first before you trust the number.

How to use this converter

  1. Enter the quoted price in the first field, exactly as it was given to you, for one unit of gold.
  2. Choose the unit that price was quoted in: gram, tola, troy ounce or kilogram.
  3. Press Convert. The results show the equivalent price per gram, per tola, per troy ounce and per kilogram, in the same currency.
  4. Read the row for the unit you want to compare on. The row for the unit you entered will match the price you typed, which is a useful check that the unit was set correctly.

Worked example

Suppose a shop quotes 1,000 per tola. Enter 1,000, choose Tola, and press Convert. The converter first finds the per-gram price: 1,000 divided by 11.6638 grams is 85.74. It then shows 85.74 per gram, 1,000.00 per tola, 2,666.67 per troy ounce and 85,735.35 per kilogram. The per-tola row matches the price you entered, which confirms the unit was set correctly. You can now compare that quote directly with a per-gram quote of, for example, 86 per gram, and see at once that the per-tola quote is the cheaper of the two on a like-for-like basis.

Try the reverse check before you rely on a market report. If a report quotes 4,040 per troy ounce, enter 4,040, choose Troy ounce, and press Convert. The per-gram result is 129.89. Multiplying 129.89 by 31.1034768 grams returns the quoted 4,040 per troy ounce, apart from rounding. If a quote includes making charges or other charges on top of the metal price, convert the metal price on its own. Making charges are often charged per gram or as a flat amount, so they do not scale with the weight unit in the same way, and mixing them into the conversion will give a misleading comparison.

Which unit should you compare on?

Compare on the unit that is most common where you are buying, and convert every other quote to that unit. Use per gram for retail jewellery and small pieces, where prices are usually discussed gram by gram. Use per tola where shops quote per tola, as they commonly do in Pakistan, India and parts of the Gulf, especially in the South Asian gold trade. Use per troy ounce when you are checking a quote against the international spot price or a market report, because spot gold is quoted per troy ounce. Use per kilogram for bars and wholesale quantities, where a per-gram figure would be needlessly long.

When in doubt, per gram is the safest common base, because it is the smallest of the four units and every other unit is a simple multiple of it. Whichever unit you choose, use the same unit for every quote in the comparison, and be careful with the word ounce. Gold uses the troy ounce, at 31.1034768 grams. An ordinary, or avoirdupois, ounce is 28.3495 grams and is not used for gold pricing. Using the ordinary ounce by mistake will understate a per-ounce price by about 9 percent, which is enough to make a bad quote look like a bargain.

What this converter does not change

This converter does not fetch a live gold price, and it does not tell you whether a quote is fair. It only restates a price you enter in different weight units. It does not adjust for karat or purity: a price for 22K gold converted to per gram is still a price for 22K gold, not a price for pure 24K gold. To compare prices across karats, use the 22K to 24K gold price converter. It also does not add making charges, stones, dealer margins or VAT, and it does not work out what a piece of gold is worth from its weight. For that, use the gold value calculator. For weight alone, with no price involved, use the gold weight converter.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert a gold price per tola to per gram?

Divide the per-tola price by 11.6638, the number of grams in one tola. For example, 1,000 per tola divided by 11.6638 is 85.74 per gram.

How many grams are in a troy ounce, a tola and a kilogram?

One troy ounce equals 31.1034768 grams, one tola equals 11.6638 grams, and one kilogram equals 1,000 grams.

Does this converter use the live gold price?

No. It converts the price you enter. It does not fetch a live price. To see the live price, use the gold price pages, which show the last-updated time.

Is a per-tola price the same gold as a per-gram price?

Yes, if the karat and purity are the same. The unit only changes how the weight is measured. The conversion restates the same price for the same gold in a different unit.

What is the difference between a troy ounce and a regular ounce?

A troy ounce, used for gold, is 31.1034768 grams. A regular, or avoirdupois, ounce is 28.3495 grams and is not used for gold pricing.

Does karat change the unit conversion?

No. The weight factors are the same for every karat. Karat changes the price per gram for a given purity, but it does not change how many grams are in a tola or a troy ounce.

Should I compare prices per gram or per tola?

Compare on one unit only. Use per gram for retail jewellery, per tola where shops quote per tola, per troy ounce against spot reports, and per kilogram for bars. Convert every quote to the same unit before you compare.
