Use this 22K to 24K gold price converter to turn a gold price quoted for one karat into the equivalent price per gram for every other common karat. Gold is rarely sold at only one purity: a shop may quote 22K jewelry, a buyer may offer for 21K, and the international spot price is quoted for pure 24K gold. Enter the price per gram you have and the karat it belongs to, and this tool shows the matching price per gram for 24K, 22K, 21K, 18K and 14K gold, so you can compare quotes fairly without doing the purity arithmetic yourself.
Why gold prices differ by karat
Karat measures how much of a gold item is pure gold. Pure gold is 24 karat, which is 100% gold, or 999 fineness. 22K gold is 22 parts gold out of 24, which is 91.67% pure. 21K is 87.5% pure, 18K is 75% pure, and 14K is 58.33% pure. The remaining share is other metals, added for strength, colour and durability, because pure gold is soft and scratches easily. A gram of 22K gold therefore contains less pure gold than a gram of 24K gold, so it is worth less per gram when only the gold content is being valued. The price difference between karats is exactly the purity difference: the same amount of pure gold, spread through different amounts of alloy, gives a different price per gram of the finished metal.
This matters most when you compare a quote with a live price. The ToolZana live feed and most market reports quote pure gold. If a jeweler quotes you a price for 22K jewelry, comparing that number directly with the 24K spot price will make the jewelry look cheaper than it really is, because you are comparing a gram that is 91.67% gold with a gram that is 100% gold. Converting both prices to the same karat — or to the pure-gold content — is the only fair comparison. The same applies when you sell: a buyer who quotes a 21K price is not necessarily offering less than a buyer who quotes a 22K price, until both are converted to the same basis.
How the conversion works
The conversion is a simple proportion. First, the tool works out the pure-gold value in your price: divide the price by the purity of the karat you entered. That gives the price of one gram of pure gold implied by your quote. Then it multiplies that pure-gold price by the purity of each target karat. In symbols, the price for a target karat equals your price multiplied by the target karat and divided by your karat: price × target karat ÷ your karat. For example, converting a 22K price to 24K means multiplying by 24 and dividing by 22, which raises the price by about 9.09%. Converting the other way, from 24K to 22K, means multiplying by 22 and dividing by 24, which lowers it by about 8.33%.
No making charges, taxes, dealer margins or refining deductions are included. The tool converts the metal price only. A shop price for finished jewelry will be higher than the converted metal price because it also includes making charges, the shop margin, and any applicable tax. Use the Gold Jewelry Price Calculator or the Jewelry Making Charges Calculator when you need the finished price of a piece, and use this converter when you only need to move a metal price between karats.
How to use this converter
- Enter the price per gram in the first field. Use the price exactly as it was quoted to you, in your own currency, per gram.
- Choose the karat that price belongs to: 24K, 22K, 21K, 18K or 14K. The default is 22K, the most common jewelry karat in many markets.
- Press Convert. The results show the equivalent price per gram for 24K, 22K, 21K, 18K and 14K gold, all in the same currency as your input.
- Read the row for the karat you want to compare with. The row for your own karat will match the price you entered, which is a useful check that the conversion ran correctly.
Worked example
Suppose a shop quotes 450 per gram for 22K gold. Enter 450, choose 22K, and press Convert. The pure-gold price implied by that quote is 450 × 24 ÷ 22, which is 490.91 per gram for 24K gold. The same quote is worth 429.55 per gram at 21K, 368.18 per gram at 18K, and 286.36 per gram at 14K. Now compare: if another shop quotes 480 per gram for 24K gold, that is cheaper than the first shop, because the first shop’s gold, expressed on the same 24K basis, costs 490.91 per gram. Without converting, 450 looks cheaper than 480 — after converting, the comparison reverses. That reversal is exactly why a karat converter matters.
Try the same check in reverse before you sell. If a buyer offers 400 per gram for 21K scrap, that equals 400 × 24 ÷ 21, or 457.14 per gram on a 24K basis, and 400 × 22 ÷ 21, or 419.05 per gram on a 22K basis. Compare that 24K figure with the live pure-gold price to see how much of the difference is the buyer’s margin and refining deduction, and how much is simply the karat difference.
Which karat should you compare?
Compare on the karat of the quote you trust most, or on 24K if you want the pure-gold basis. In Saudi Arabia and much of the Gulf, 21K and 22K are the everyday jewelry karats, while investment bars and coins are usually 24K. In many other markets 18K is the standard for fine jewelry, and 14K is common for everyday pieces in the United States. There is no single right karat: the right one is the one that makes the two quotes you are comparing use the same basis. Always check that a quote states its karat. A price without a karat cannot be compared with any other price, however attractive it looks.
Remember that karat is only purity. It says nothing about weight, craftsmanship, brand, or the other metals in the alloy, and two pieces of the same karat and weight can still have very different finished prices. For the pure-gold weight inside a piece, use the Gold Weight and Purity Calculator; for a live price per gram at your karat, use the Gold Rate Per Gram Calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert a 22K gold price to 24K?
Multiply the 22K price per gram by 24 and divide by 22. For example, 450 per gram at 22K equals 490.91 per gram at 24K. This converter does the same calculation for all five common karats at once.
Why is 24K gold more expensive per gram than 22K?
Because a gram of 24K gold is 100% pure gold, while a gram of 22K gold is 91.67% gold and 8.33% other metals. The 24K gram contains more pure gold, so its metal value per gram is higher.
Does this converter include making charges or tax?
No. It converts the metal price only. Making charges, dealer margins and taxes such as VAT are extra, and a finished jewelry price will be higher than the converted metal price.
What purity are 21K, 18K and 14K gold?
21K is 87.5% pure gold, 18K is 75% pure, and 14K is 58.33% pure. Their fineness values are 875, 750 and 583 respectively.
Can I enter a price in any currency?
Yes. Enter the price per gram in whatever currency it was quoted in, and all results use that same currency. The converter does not convert currencies; use the Currency Converter for that.
What if my price is per tola or per ounce, not per gram?
Convert it to a per-gram price first with the Gold Price per Gram, Tola and Ounce Converter, then enter the per-gram price here.
Is the converted price a live market price?
No. The converted price is only your entered price restated at other karats. For a live price, check the live gold price feed and convert that price with this tool.
