Gold Price with VAT Calculator

The Gold Price with VAT Calculator works out the VAT on a gold price and the total you pay, in seconds. Enter the price before VAT, keep the VAT rate at 15% or change it, and press Calculate. The result shows the VAT amount and the total with VAT, so you can check a shop quote before you pay.

How It Works

When VAT is added, the VAT amount is the price before VAT multiplied by the VAT rate, divided by 100. The total with VAT is the price before VAT plus the VAT amount. When VAT is removed, the calculator works backwards: it divides the VAT-inclusive price by one plus the VAT rate to find the price before VAT, and the difference is the VAT already included.

The calculator does arithmetic only. It does not fetch a live gold price and it does not decide whether VAT applies to a particular purchase. Enter the price from your quote, and use the rate that applies to that purchase.

How to Use

  1. Enter the gold price in the first field. If the seller lists making charges separately, add them in the second field so the VAT is worked out on the full amount before VAT.
  2. Choose Add VAT if your price excludes VAT, or Remove VAT if your price already includes VAT.
  3. Keep the VAT rate at 15% for Saudi Arabia, or type a different rate if another rate applies.
  4. Press Calculate and read the VAT amount and the total. Change any number and press Calculate again to compare quotes.

Worked Example

Take a gold price of SAR 1,000 before VAT, with no separate charges, at a VAT rate of 15%. The VAT amount is SAR 1,000 multiplied by 15 and divided by 100, which is SAR 150. The total with VAT is SAR 1,000 plus SAR 150, which is SAR 1,150.

Now work backwards from SAR 1,150 with VAT included. Divide SAR 1,150 by 1.15 to get SAR 1,000 before VAT. The VAT already included is SAR 1,150 minus SAR 1,000, which is SAR 150. Both directions give the same VAT amount, which is a useful check when you compare a quote that shows VAT separately with one that shows a single total.

Gold Price, Making Charges, and VAT

A shop quote for gold jewellery often shows the metal value, the making charges, and VAT as separate lines. To use this calculator, add the metal value and the making charges together and enter that total as the price before VAT, or enter the metal value in the first field and the making charges in the second field. Either way, the VAT is worked out on the combined amount before VAT.

Always compare like with like. A quote that already includes VAT will look higher than a quote that excludes VAT, even when the gold and the making charges cost the same. Use the Remove VAT mode on the VAT-inclusive quote to find its price before VAT, then compare it with the other quote on the same basis. This calculator is not tax advice. If you are unsure whether VAT applies, or which rate applies, check the rules that apply to your purchase or ask the seller to show the VAT line on the invoice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What VAT rate does this calculator start with?

The calculator starts at 15%. You can change the rate to any value from 0 to 100, so it works wherever a different rate applies.

How do I add VAT to a gold price?

Enter the price before VAT, choose Add VAT, set the rate, and press Calculate. The VAT amount is the price before VAT multiplied by the rate and divided by 100, and the total is the price plus the VAT amount.

How do I remove VAT from a price that already includes it?

Enter the VAT-inclusive price, choose Remove VAT, set the rate, and press Calculate. The calculator divides the price by one plus the rate to find the price before VAT, and the difference is the VAT included.

Should making charges be included before VAT?

Enter making charges in the second field so they are part of the amount before VAT, matching the total on your quote. If the seller already includes making charges in the price, leave the second field at 0.

Does the result use the live gold price?

No. Enter the price from your quote. To check the current market price, see the Live Gold Price page or the Gold Price in Saudi Arabia page.

Can I use this calculator for a price in another currency?

Yes. The maths is the same in any currency. The labels show SAR, but the result amounts are in whatever currency you entered.

Is this tax advice?

No. This calculator does arithmetic only. It is not tax advice. Check the rules that apply to your purchase if you are unsure whether VAT applies or which rate applies.
